Red Gate site

The area around the Red Gate site was protected by a bastion and a demi-bastion. The demi-bastion was near the gate in Paardenmarkt. The bastion was situated in the Tunnelpaats where the “Houwer” of the brewer’s guild was located. This closed basin in the moat around the city drew fresh water from the Schijn River. This water was ferried to the Water House (Waterhuis) through the Brewer’s Cellar and the Brewer’s Conduit. The Noorderlijn project which is currently being built runs through the foundations of the bastions. These walls will first be subjected to an archaeological survey and measured.
