Kronenburg Tower

Kronenburg Tower was erected in 1315 as a defence and watchtower over the Scheldt. It was situated along the city’s southern fringe. After the citadel’s construction in 1567, the structure’s military use became obsolete. It was demolished along with other ramparts. Above-ground nothing points to this former structure, but the foundation of Kronenburg Tower is still there. The remnants were temporarily exposed and archaeologists were able to study them during excavation works in Scheldestraat. A new build has since been erected on the old tower’s foundation.
