Blue Tower

The Blue Tower was part of the medieval city wall and was converted into a lock at the end of the fifteenth century so boats could sail into the city from Herentalse Vaart.
An archaeological survey in 2010 revealed that the tower was almost completely demolished and rebuilt for this purpose. When the Spanish ramparts replaced the medieval city wall in the sixteenth century, the Blue Tower was not demolished but incorporated in them instead. The tower was preserved during the demolition of the Spanish ramparts. It was finally demolished in 1879, when the Leien were connected to the Meir.
