The Koraalberg

The medieval population used to bury its dead in or around churches. Therefore Koraalberg is a relatively strange place to find a skull from this era. Research has revealed that the skull belonged to a young man, aged between 25 and 30 years. His cause of death is unknown.

In the ninth century, Antwerp was a small settlement in the Scheldt river bend. We know that Vikings destroyed the settlement in 836 but to date we were unable to demonstrate this archaeologically. Possibly we can link the skull to this event. Who knows, he may have even been a Viking…
