Launch of 'Antwerpen Doorgrond | Antwerp Heritage'

On 24 June 2014 the Heritage department of the city of Antwerp has launched the mobile website 'Antwerpen doorgrond'.

The Koraalberg

The “oldest Antwerper” was found in 1997 during construction in Koraalberg. This skull of a young man dates from the ninth century.

Kipdorppoort Gate

Kipdorp Gate was one of the two gateways to the sixteenth-century city. The entire site has been preserved underground.

Keizerspoort Gate

Keizerspoort Gate was one of the five gateways into the city during the period of the Spanish ramparts. In 2002, the foundation of the gate was excavated.

The historic port Nieuwstad

Antwerp had an impressive port and quays. This “protected mooring” ran from St. Michael's Abbey in the south to the Bastion of Kattenberg to the north of the city.

Steen Castle

Antwerp’s Steen Castle was part of the walled fortress city of Antwerp. It served as a residence for the margrave and at one time was also a museum. Nowadays it is an educational space for children.

The Bishop's Palace, a long history

The history of the bishop's palace starts in the fourteenth century. Over the centuries, the building had several uses.

Herentalse Vaart canal

Herentalse Vaart was built in the fifteenth century to supply Antwerp with pure drinking water. The canal disappeared in the nineteenth century.

Hanseatic House

Until 1893, Antwerp’s Hanseatic House stood where the MAS Museum is located today. It was commissioned by the German Hanseatic League.
