Site Kipdorp

When the Iron Viaduct in Rooseveltplaats was demolished in 2006, the remnants of the sixteenth-century Kipdorpbrug bridge and bastion were revealed. The current name, Kipdorpbrug, refers to the former bridge across the city moat, which was one of the most important gateways into the city. An archaeological survey from 2012 revealed that remnants of the bastion have been preserved until 7 metres beneath the Leien. The planned tunnels under the new Opera square run through these monumental remnants. The bridge, part of the bastion and the ramparts will become visible again for passers-by in the new design.
