Schijn Bastion

The Schijn Bastion was one of the northern bastions. It had straight, recessed flanks, two faces and two platforms for artillery. It was built after 1551 under the supervision of the contractor Gilbert Van Schoonbeke. He rapidly completed the Spanish Ramparts in the years between 1551 and 1553. It was also called ‘bastion pesthuys’, after the nearby hospice for people suffering from bubonic plague.
