Burchtgracht Street

Antwerp was probably already a walled city as early as the eleventh century, with a wall and moat around the fortress. A bridge was built across the moat in 1420, near Zakstraat. Archaeologists studied the profile of the moat during an archaeological survey in 2008-2009. This revealed that it had been cleaned up on several occasions and had been filled in before the end of the late Middle Ages, after which buildings had been built on it. The survey also uncovered a pillar of the fifteenth-century bridge. The bridge was preserved and incorporated in the underground car park of the new-build. Unfortunately, it is not open to the public.
