The Citadel

The citadel was commissioned by King Philip II and the Duke of Alva in 1567. A wall connected the citadel with the Spanish ramparts. The citadel was designed to deter attackers and control the city. That is why the people of Antwerp sometimes also referred to it as the dwangburcht (stronghold). The pentagonal building is surrounded by a moat and has a bastion on each corner. The citadel was located and surveyed on various occasions in the margin of construction in Antwerpen-Zuid. Unfortunately nothing was preserved above ground level.
