Hanseatic House

An archaeological survey of the remnants of the building was organised prior to the construction of the new museum.
The Hanseatic House was built around 1550 for the Hanseatic League. It was a monumental building, in a late-Renaissance palazzo style with Italianate influences. After the fall of Antwerp, the building was no longer used for trading. In 1893, it burnt down. From then on, only the square’s name, i.e., Hanzestedenplaats, still refers to the Hanseatic House. An archaeological survey was conducted here in 2005-2006 prior to the construction of the MAS, during which the entire cellar of the former Hanseatic House was discovered.
