Kipdorppoort Gate

Part of the medieval gate was incorporated in the new Kipdorp Gate during the construction of the sixteenth-century city wall. The new gate had a Renaissance façade: it was flanked by four half-pillars and adorned with a coat of arms, held aloft by two lions.
The Duke of Anjou invaded the city in 1583 through this gate. The “French Fury” was quickly repelled thanks to strong opposition by the civilian population. An open-air archaeological site has been included in the new plans for Operaplein so the public can view Kipdorpbrug and the bastion.
