Red Gate

The medieval “Red Tower” city gate was not demolished when the new Spanish ramparts were built as the tower was used as a prison. The new city gate, called the Red Gate, was somewhat lower and was designed to be equipped with heavy artillery. The surrounding area around the Red Gate was protected by a bastion and a demi-bastion. The demi-bastion was situated near the gate in Paardenmarkt. It had a rounded épaulement so the flank and oreillon were protected. The bastion was situated in Tunnelplaats. The Noorderlijn project which is currently being built runs through the foundations of the bridge and bastions. These walls will first be subjected to an archaeological survey and measured.
