Schijn River Lock

The lock on the Schijn River was part of the nineteenth-century expansion of the Spanish ramparts. The lock – near the present-day Hardenvoortbrug Bridge – connected the river with the moat, regulating water levels in this moat and the moat around it. It consisted of an open canal with lock doors in the secondary moat and a vaulted canal through the Bastion of Schijn.
The lock was excavated and measured in 2015 (All-Archeo) in preparation of the construction of a new ZNA hospital in this location. The archaeological survey determined the structure and operation of the lock.
