Central Park

The Fortress of Herentals was part of the Spanish city walls. It was demolished when the Brialmont city wall (from 1859) was built. In 1867, an English landscape park, based on a design by Eduard Keilig, was built here.

During World War II, the park had a military function again as it became the headquarters of the “Abschnitt Antwerpen”, part of the Atlantik Wall. The three bunkers in the park are a remnant of this. The British captured the German bunkers on 4 September 1944.
