Sint-Pietersvliet (en)

Around 1250, Sint-Pietersvliet was already part of the medieval city, serving as a moat around the city walls. During subsequent expansion phases, the harbour was preserved and enclosed by the wharves, Meekaai and Steenen Kraan. High walls and several towers were built as fortifications on either side of the harbour, which connected with the Scheldt. As a result, ships were able to unload their goods in the city itself. Under Napoleon the high walls were demolished and a new, low quay wall built. He also ordered the renovation of Sint-Pietersvliet.
