Fortress Wall

Antwerp’s oldest city wall was probably erected in the eleventh century to replace the earthen wall that was used to defend the fortress. In the early sixteenth century, the wall was cut through when Vleeshuisstraat was built. Archaeologists were able to study the wall in more detail during works on a newbuild in 2008-2009. Their survey revealed that there were foundations for hall towers at regular intervals. Two of these foundations were preserved in the underground car park. The line of the fortress wall became visible again when the street was rebuilt in 2013.
