Tabaksvest school site

The 37 skeletons (34 men and 3 women) were divided between two pits in various orientations. They date from the second half of the sixteenth century. There were no traces of wooden coffins. The young age of the women is especially striking. The majority of the men were between the ages of 18 and 25. It is clear that the dead were buried together, which points to a traumatic event. In view of the location and the dating, the skeletons are thought to be related to the events of the Spanish Fury. More than 7,000 people died during this insurgency in the autumn of 1575.
